Books

We will use two text books:

  • Rob Kitchin. The Data Revolution - Big Data, Open Data, Data Infrastructures & Their Consequences. Sage, 2014.
  • Carlos Castillo. Big Crisis Data - Social Media in Disasters and Time-Critical Situations. Cambridge, 2016.

Both books are general and quite easy-to-read overview books. Kithcin writes about big data in general, whereas Castillo focusses on emergency management specifically.

Papers

We will supplement the text books with more detailed research papers that are also part of the course curriculum. Before each session, the list of papers for discussion will be announced and assigned to presenters. See the Sessions page for paper lists.
